In support  of LIONS Clubs International’s focus onenvironmental issues & Miri City’s Go Green vision, the Leo club of Riam Road Secondary School, Miri has  been successfully   carrying out a monthly old newspapers (ONP) recycling project since 2011.

The frequency of the ONP project has been carried out upon the advice of  RRSS  CEO Dato’ Dr. Fong Onn Min and ACEO Miss Chan Siew Ngo. The project is also under the guidance of 3 faculty advisors, Madam Yeoh Ban Kheng @ Lion Diana Yeoh, Miss Lily Wong & Madam Ling Kiew Liong.

CEO of Riam Road Secondary School ,Dato’ Dr. Fong Onn Min informed that  he is happy that the collection and sale of old newspapers for recycling is RRSS’s long term annual event. He constantly reminds all staff and students of the importance of environmental projects.

Dato’  Dr. Fong Onn Min believes that the campaign will create an awareness among the staff and students thattrash can be turned into cash while looking after Mother Earth.

Project  Organising  Chairperson, Leo Rene Alistair Raj would like to convey the Leo Club’s gratitude to staff, students & students' parents, relatives and friends who have been  supporting   this  environmental  project  since 2011. He hopes for continuous support in the years tocome.

On Friday08.08.2014, a total of 7618.33kg of ONP and 31kg of old magazines was collected.

The money obtained from the sale of the old newspapers was used for cash prizes for the top 3 winners & incentive prize winners. The balance of the money will be reserved for the Leo garden and school garden, canteen waste separation project  and also to buy books &magazines and  any other materials or furniture required for the school  library.

This is the environmental and educational spin-offs from this ONP collection project for recycling. It is the Leo club’s vision & mission to help to build up the school  library besides looking after the garden & canteen.
